Anklet Sizing Guide: How to Measure Your Ankle and Get the Fit Right

Anklet Sizing Guide: How to Measure Your Ankle and Get the Fit Right

Fit is the single most common reason an anklet gets returned, and almost always for the same two reasons: it slid down onto the foot, or it pinched after an hour. Both are sizing problems, and both are avoidable in about two minutes.

This anklet sizing guide covers everything you need: three ways to measure at home, a full size chart in inches and centimetres, how to choose between a snug and a relaxed fit, sizing for children and brides, and what to do when a piece arrives slightly wrong. Every design shown is from our Anklets  in solid 925 silver.

The 60-Second Answer

1

Measure

Just above the ankle bone with a soft tape, snug but with no pressure.

2

Add allowance

0.5 inch for a close fit, or 1 inch for a relaxed drape.

3

Check

One finger should slide comfortably under the closed chain.

4

Unsure?

Buy adjustable and skip the maths entirely.

That is the whole method. Everything below is the detail that makes it reliable.

Where Exactly to Measure

The ankle is not a cylinder, which is why the spot you choose changes the number by as much as half an inch.

Measure just above the ankle bone

Find the bony knob on the outside of your ankle. Place the tape immediately above it, not across it. This is where a well-fitting anklet naturally settles, so it is the only measurement that predicts the fit accurately.

Why not over the bone or lower

Measure across the bone and you get a larger number than the chain will actually sit at, so the anklet arrives loose. Measure lower, near the foot, and you get a narrower reading, so it arrives tight. The difference between the two points is enough to ruin the fit.

Stand, do not sit

Measure standing with your weight on both feet. Sitting with your leg raised slightly reduces the circumference, which is one of the quiet reasons an anklet feels tighter in real life than it did when you measured.

3 Ways to Measure at Home

Method 1: Soft measuring tape

The quickest option if you have a tailor’s tape. Wrap it just above the ankle bone, keep it snug without pressing into the skin, and read the number where the tape meets itself. Take the reading twice to be sure.

Method 2: String or thread

Wrap a piece of string around the same spot, mark where it overlaps with a pen, then lay it flat against a ruler. Use a string that does not stretch, since elastic thread will give you a reading smaller than reality.

Method 3: Paper strip

Cut a strip of paper about a centimetre wide, wrap it around the ankle, mark the overlap and measure the strip. This is the most accurate of the three for most people, because paper does not stretch at all and holds its shape while you mark it.

What about phone apps?

Measuring apps that use the camera are not reliable at this scale. A half-inch error is meaningless on a room, and decisive on an anklet. Use a physical method.

Anklet Size Chart

Find your measured ankle size in the first column, then read across to the anklet length you should order.

Ankle size In cm Close fit anklet Relaxed fit anklet
8.0 inches 20.3 cm 8.5 inches 9.0 inches
8.5 inches 21.6 cm 9.0 inches 9.5 inches
9.0 inches 22.9 cm 9.5 inches 10.0 inches
9.5 inches 24.1 cm 10.0 inches 10.5 inches
10.0 inches 25.4 cm 10.5 inches 11.0 inches
10.5 inches 26.7 cm 11.0 inches 11.5 inches
11.0 inches 27.9 cm 11.5 inches 12.0 inches

Most adult women measure between 9 and 10 inches, which is why 9.5 and 10 inch anklets are the most commonly sold lengths in India. If your number falls between two rows, round up rather than down. A slightly loose anklet is wearable; a tight one is not.

Snug, Relaxed or Adjustable?

Three anklet fit types: snug, relaxed and adjustable

The fit you choose should follow what you wear it with.

Snug fit: ankle + 0.5 inch

The chain sits close to the skin with very little movement. Best for office wear, closed footwear, fine chains and any stack, since multiple chains need to stay in their layers rather than sliding over each other.

Relaxed fit: ankle + 1 inch

The chain drapes slightly towards the foot and moves as you walk. Best for charm payals, where the movement is the point, and for open footwear or barefoot styling.

Adjustable: when you cannot measure

An extender chain lets one anklet cover a range of sizes. Choose this when you are buying a gift, when ankles swell through the day, or for a growing child. It is the single most practical answer to a sizing question.

The One-Finger Test

Once the anklet arrives, this is how you confirm the fit in five seconds. Close the clasp and slide one finger between the chain and your skin.

  • One finger fits with no gap left over: correct fit.
  • Two fingers slide in easily: too loose, and it will slip onto the top of your foot.
  • You cannot get a finger in: too tight, and it will mark the skin within an hour.
  • It sits above the ankle bone when you stand: the chain is at the right length.

Do this test at the end of the day rather than first thing in the morning, when the feet are at their largest.

6 Sizing Mistakes to Avoid

Measuring across the ankle bone

The most common error, and the reason so many anklets arrive loose. Always measure just above it.

Pulling the tape tight

A tape pulled taut compresses the skin and gives you a number that no chain can comfortably match. Snug means it stays in place without pressing.

Measuring only in the morning

Feet and ankles swell through the day. If you measure at 8 am and the number is borderline, measure again in the evening and use the larger reading.

Using shoe size or ring size

Neither has any correlation with ankle circumference. Two people with the same shoe size can be an inch apart at the ankle.

Forgetting the extra half inch

Ordering an anklet at exactly your ankle measurement gives you a chain that touches the skin with no room. It needs the extra length to drape.

Guessing for a gift

Do not estimate from how someone looks. Buy adjustable, which is also why adjustable pieces are the most popular gifting choice.

Sizing for Specific Situations

Children

Children’s ankles usually measure between 5 and 7 inches, and they grow quickly, so an adjustable piece with a secure clasp is the sensible choice. Avoid long drape lengths that can catch on furniture or clothing. Sizes for children are in our kid’s collection.

Brides

Heavy bridal payals behave differently from light chains: the extra weight pulls the chain downward, so a snug fit works better than a relaxed one. Order six to eight weeks ahead and trial the fit with your wedding footwear. If you are pairing with toe rings, check both together.

Wearing a pair on both feet

Ankles are rarely identical. Measure both, and if they differ by more than a quarter inch, size to the larger one or choose adjustable pieces so each sits correctly.

Pregnancy and medical swelling

Swelling can change ankle circumference significantly. Adjustable anklets are the only sensible choice here, and it is worth removing the piece if it begins to feel tight rather than waiting.

Layering and stacking

If you plan to wear two or three anklets together, vary the lengths slightly rather than buying identical sizes. A half-inch difference between layers lets each one sit in its own position instead of tangling.

What to Do If the Size Is Wrong

It happens, and most of it is fixable.

  • Slightly loose: an extender chain or a jeweller-fitted link adjustment solves it in minutes.
  • Slightly tight: a short extender is the usual fix, and it costs very little.
  • Significantly wrong: this is what a return policy is for. Ours is on the return and refund policy page, and delivery timelines are on the shipping policy page.
  • Not sure before ordering: message our team on WhatsApp through the contact page and we will help you pick the length.

One thing not to do is stretch the chain by hand to gain length. On a solid 925 silver piece this weakens the links, and the chain will eventually part at the weakest one.

Does the Metal Change the Sizing?

The length maths stays the same, but the behaviour of the chain does not. Solid 925 sterling silver holds its shape and keeps the length you ordered. Plated and hollow pieces deform under weight, so a chain that measured correctly on arrival can sit differently after a few months of wear.

This is also why fit questions on a solid silver anklet are usually a one-time conversation. You can read about how we make ours on our about us page, and the routine that keeps the clasp and links healthy is in our care for jewellery guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I measure my ankle for an anklet?

Wrap a soft tape, a string or a paper strip just above the ankle bone while standing, snug but without pressure. Note the measurement, then add half an inch for a close fit or one inch for a relaxed drape.

What is the standard anklet size for women?

Most adult women wear between 9 and 10 inches, which makes 9.5 and 10 inch anklets the most commonly sold lengths in India. Measure your own ankle rather than assuming, since the range runs from about 8 to 11 inches.

Should an anklet be tight or loose?

Neither. A correctly sized anklet lets one finger slide underneath comfortably. Too tight marks the skin, too loose slips onto the top of the foot.

What size anklet should I buy if I am not sure?

Buy an adjustable anklet. An extender chain covers a range of sizes and removes the need for an exact measurement, which is also why it is the safest choice for a gift.

How many inches is a standard anklet?

Anklets are commonly made between 9 and 11 inches. The right one for you is your ankle measurement plus half an inch to one inch.

Can an anklet be resized?

Yes, within limits. Adding an extender is simple and inexpensive, and a jeweller can remove links to shorten a chain. Never stretch a chain by hand, as it weakens the links.

Does ankle size change during the day?

Yes. Ankles swell through the day, especially in heat, after long periods of standing or during travel. Measure in the evening if your number is borderline.

What size anklet is right for a child?

Children’s ankles usually measure 5 to 7 inches. Choose an adjustable piece with a secure clasp, since children grow quickly and a long drape length can catch on things.

Is anklet size the same as bracelet size?

No. The ankle is considerably larger than the wrist, usually by two to three inches. Never order an anklet using a bracelet measurement.

Measure Once, Wear It for Years

Sizing is the least glamorous part of buying jewellery and the part that decides whether the piece gets worn. Two minutes with a tape, half an inch of allowance and the one-finger test will cover almost every situation in this guide.
